About Klypi

Klypi, pronounced like the 90’s Virtual Office Assistant,
is a recent transplant to the planet Earth, drawn by errant signals, seeking purpose, meaning, and the promise of pop stardom. What all began with the arrival of a little golden record in their tiny star system led to an obsession with Earth entertainment. The song “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry became Klypi’s daily obsession.

“How can I make something like that?,” they asked themselves. Eventually curiosity got the better of them. They quit their job as a radioactive bean slinger, and became a roadie for the sensational intergalactic audio-visual performer Onë on their First Contact Tour, with stops at Betelgeuse, Rigel, and notably a residency at Electra, the most happening club in the Pleiades. Then came the tour’s finale in Lincoln County, Nevada, on Earth.

Unfortunately, Area 51, despite its Trisolaran warehouse trappings and charming goons, turned out to be the last place any intergalactic road hand would wish to find themselves. Released of their own recognizance after a head shave, nano-chipping, and six weeks of DBT, Klypi was at the edge of the city-state of Angels, with naught but an Apple computer, beat machine, and neat stack of pretty green paper.

Earth was nothing like they thought it would be — but the promise of the golden record was real - and just a bus ride away. Pop stardom - life in the most happening place in the local group. The chance to shatter old icons. The chance for Klypi to make their place among the stars. So they chartered their way out of the desert, and toward the bright city, the center of the universe.

Behind the mask

AC Carter (b. Birmingham, Alabama)
is a musician and visual artist based in Los Angeles, CA. Working across music, graphic design, technology, character building, fashion, performance, and painting, Carter's work investigates themes of gender, love, class, and the American Dream. A 2020 MFA Sculpture graduate from the University of Georgia, much of the materials Carter uses are words, audio, synthesizers, paint, technology, hardware supplies, fabric, and social media. Carter’s current focus is on their musical pop persona, Klypi (pronounced like the 96’ Windows Office Assistant). Klypi is an alien, from a small planet in the Milky Way, who - after discovering “rock music” from NASA’s Voyager Golden Record, travels to Earth to pursue their dream of becoming a pop star. However, once landed and ingrained into Earth - redact - American-life, they soon realize the dream that drove them was a myth all along. How does Klypi continue to pursue a life as an artist while also fitting into a ridged and rigged society?

Carter’s work has been featured in publications such as Post-Punk Online, WUSSY Mag, LADYGUNN, Weirdo Music Forever, New American Painting, Athen’s Flagpole, and the Nashville Scene. Carter attended the Stove Works Residency in Chattanooga in November 2020 and the Wassaic Project Residency in Winter 2022. As a musician, Carter has performed at Dynasty Handbag’s Weirdo Night at Zebulon in Los Angeles and has opened for a variety of artists including Will Butler + Sister Squares, Molly Nilsson, John Maus, Jennifer Vanilla, David Microwave, and many others. Carter has also performed at festivals like Big Ears, Secret Stages, and Athens Popfest. In 2024, they released their first self-produced album through Lolipop Records—writing, recording, producing, and designing the record as a giant floppy disk. As an artist, Carter has shown at bitforms in NYC, Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville, and Torrance Shipman Gallery in Brooklyn. Carter has also designed garments for performing artists such as Kevin Barnes' Of Montreal music video “No Plateau Phase / No Careerism, No Corruption” and Jennifer Vanilla’s performance at MoMA PS1.
